Why Wishes?
Wishes transform the lives of seriously ill children, their families and communities. Research shows that wishes work to complement medical treatment, helping to calm, distract and empower sick children at the time they need it most.

SHAYLA, 11
For a Summer birthday with my favourite animals

Shayla won’t ever forget her ninth birthday. The little girl with the big smile had her wish come true the same time as she turned 9! Shayla wanted a birthday in the sun and to meet her favourite animals, so Make-A-Wish sent her from Melbourne to Queensland for her wish!
Shayla’s wish came after a long medical journey to treat her acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. She had almost three years of chemotherapy, thousands of blood tests, and hundreds of hospital admissions. Wish mum Diane said Shayla had shown great determination during her treatment, and the wish enabled Shayla to create new, positive memories.

POPPY, 9
To cook sausage rolls with Justine Schofield
Budding chef Poppy has grown up with the smell of homemade food in her nostrils. A love of cooking has been instilled in her by her mother's mum and her father's Turkish mother. But her time in the kitchen was paused three years ago when mum Courtney noticed a lump in Poppy's neck and a change in how her chest looked. "They took blood, and they knew straight away by her blood count that she had leukaemia."
The food-loving Poppy's wish was to meet chef and TV star Justine Schofield and to make sausage rolls with her. A limousine pulling up outside her house at 6.30am marked the start of Poppy's wishday. It would take Poppy, her sister Odessa and their mum and dad to the studio to meet Justine and film for Justine's Channel 10 show Everyday Gourmet.

WILLOW, 7
To find Nemo on the Great Barrier Reef

Wish mum Mary smiles when she thinks about how much her daughter Willow’s wish will mean to her.
Willow, aged 7, was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. But what kept the brave little girl happy during her four open-heart surgeries at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital was the massive fish tank downstairs from the wards.
